Update and News – 3rd October 2026

Welcome Back

We had the pleasure of another full house of 30 juniors coming through the conference rooms to enjoy, learn and play chess.

We welcomed Saint for the 1st time and good to see Lucas and Markas coming along again, in fact it is great to see all of our new recruits from September becoming regulars. Our ages range from 6-15 and we welcome all to play chess.

Our club would not be possible without the support of our helpers and many thanks to George Hornsby (Wimborne) and Lynsey Aris (Bournemouth) for covering Graham and Steve yesterday. Also, to Tony, Peter Nimmo and Dee for supporting the sessions.

It is also a good sign when the players want to continue after the sessions finish. We always stress the importance of practising in the week on all the chess engines online, our own web site, YouTube and many other ways of learning and playing.

Coaching Sessions

Tony taking Harvey, Jake, Hektor, Sarah and Ram through visualise mates in 2 and 3 moves. Special mention to Ram and Sarah solving nearly all of the positions.

George took the higher level of advanced players through attacking with an advanced e5 pawn (typical French Caro structures with a closed centre). This was well received.

Eric took the intermediate group of 5 players through mating positions in 2 and 3 moves. Pattern recognition is key and the more you can see these positions you will improve in your own games.

Lynsey had his hands full with a group of lively beginners – they all did well.

2nd Session

Our second session is now up to 15 players and most of the 1st session lessons were repeated.

Peter went through some of the Italian Game variations including the fried liver trap. He gave a brief explanation of pins, opening goals and discovered attacks and went over structure and development.

Eric tried to help Preston through the basics of the moves and I really hope he can learn these over the next few weeks – he is a pleasure to teach.

Ladder Board Results – Round 3

All games were notated and played in a good spirit with the best chess etiquette. Several went down to time control limits of 15 minutes each. The tables are very close after 3 weeks and it will be interesting to see who can advance over the next few weeks.
