This is a lively & enthusiastic club meet at the Bournemouth Central Library every Saturday in 2024 except for the summer holidays in August.

There are two sessions each Saturday:- 10.00am to 11am and 11.30am to 12.30pm.

We require you to pre book/register in advance, including payment, which is to be made online. The payment fee is £7.50, please see the form below for registration and payment details.

You will need to book by session – first or second – and would ask you to commit to the session you choose, as it’s difficult to change during these unusual times.

We have several chess experienced chess teachers all with DBS certification, who are allocated as follows;

Total beginners (1st level)

Intermediate improvers (2nd level)

Advanced level (3rd level)

BOTH SESSIONS INCLUDE THREE SECTIONS AND WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MOVE PLAYERS WITHIN THE SECTIONS TO IMPROVE ABILITY AND TECHNIQUES.

For each session there is a charge of £7.50 per session

WE ENCOURAGE ALL PLAYERS TO LOOK AT OUR WEBSITE :-

The club has been running for 10 years now at both the central library and previously at the Elstead hotel. We estimate we have enjoyed teaching literally hundreds of children and have shown all how to play and enjoy chess at all levels.

We aim to have a minimum of 4/5 trainers for each session with supplementary support from the local chess community, but mostly from Poole chess club. We have excellent welfare support from my wife Dee who comes along and tends to all juniors needs, as and when.

I am sincerely proud of the club and our mission is to provide chess for all. That is from beginner standard to intermediate and to those dedicated children that wish to advance to a high level and compete in competitions.

Our method of teaching is 25-30 minutes teaching and 30 minutes playing against children of a comparable standard so the lessons learnt are practiced. Just playing games without learning is repetitive and cannot improve play, so it’s important to learn, practice and play in equal measures.

We have developed several of our juniors into local adult chess leagues and even national leagues and two of juniors have been Hampshire under 10 and under 12 champions. Chess at all levels.

WHO WE ARE:-

Eric Sachs

has been the Dorset Junior Chess Officer for a number of years and is now independently concentrating on the Bournemouth Junior Chess Club. Eric has given chess lessons in several local primary and senior schools and seen many of our protegies advance from junior chess to our local adult chess league. Eric believes chess develops the mind for all the right reasons using chess as a catalyst. Chess provides a life skill.

Paul Errington

Paul has supported the club from the beginning and has also taught in several local primary and senior schools. Paul is Chairman of the local Bournemouth Chess Club in Wimborne Road.

Steve Bailey

has also supported for a number of years. Steve is extremely personable and has helped develop many beginners to an intermediate standard. Steve is a member of the Poole chess club.

Tony Sanderson

Tony is our ‘puzzle king’ and believes solving puzzles provides pattern recognition and will help junior chess players to advance their game. He has improved several of our advanced players in his sessions. Tony provides strong theoretical openings and develops the pieces around this foundation.

Tony is an active member of the Poole Chess Club and plays very attractive and enterprising chess.

Martin O’Neill

Plays in division 1 and often plays the top players in Dorset on boards 1 or 2. Martin likes to show the beauty and wonder of chess and make it fun. He likes to break things down into simple steps and is particularly keen on training in calculation which is the quickest way to improve. Logical chess thinking also has applications to maths and science.

Azhar Ghose

has recently joined us and is an active member of the Bournemouth Chess Club. He is extremely personable and has a very good approach with children. He enjoys chess as a thinking game and encourages the children to talk about their thought process and how to find their next best move !

He has studied many openings and will pass this knowledge onto the beginners. We are very happy to have him as part of our Junior chess team.

We encourage you to use our website for all that is junior chess and enjoy and practice your chess skills.

Chess is a ‘battle of ideas’ a great tool for developing the young thinking minds.

Remember, Chess is a life skill.
