JUNIOR CHESS UPDATE – 29/3/25

Published by Andres Borgas on

EASTER BREAK AND END OF TERM COMPETION

Please note we will continue our lessons through Easter so 4 weeks in April and have an end of term all play all on the 26/4 starting at 10-12pm with prize giving to follow. Please let me know if you are playing.

2 Rounds to go for the Ladder board competition – 5/4 and 12/4 with prize giving on the 19/4, good luck to all players.

It was another enjoyable morning with a total of 28 juniors of all ages coming along to learn and play chess.

Kit is 5 years old and doing well and Nathan just 6 joined yesterday and seems very keen – they seem to be getting younger and it’s a great see them. Anthony is another newcomer and we wish him well in his chess journey.

In our usual programme of having 2 sessions broken into 3 groups – advanced, intermediate and beginners we allocate the juniors by their current levels and in hopefully see them progress into the higher sections. This is a proven way of teaching and learning and enjoying chess.

Tony our puzzle expert set up a variety of levels of puzzles with Josh joining for the 1st time – welcome Josh and followed by matches in our ladder (league tables) in the 2nd half of the session.

Steve with the beginners doing a sterling job bringing on Kit and others in both sessions – Eric & Azhar went through mating and back rank puzzles with the intermediates to show them pattern recognition.

The 2nd session is now getting full with 15 juniors queuing up to learn and play. Martin took the advanced group and went through his selection of puzzles. We really hope this improves their games but as its only a short time we encourage all our juniors to follow up and play in the week otherwise its difficult to improve.

Similar to all hobbies/sports and life – the more you put in the more you can get out and develop.

2nd session teaching was similar to the 1st with mating and back rank lessons shown to the intermediates.

See pics of 1st and 2nd session ladder board games with a full room and a total of 16 games being played on the clock and mostly with notation.
