It was welcome back to all after the Xmas and New Year holidays and we had a good turnout of 24 juniors ready to play and enjoy chess with renewed enthusiasm.

This was supported by our full coaching team of Steve/Paul/Azhar/Tony/Martin and your author. Having individual and small group teaching is a real advantage to learning and progressing the juniors as previous experience has showed.

We welcomed Kit who is 5 years old for the 1st time and Steve was pleased to see his potential and ability to learn.

Tony took on a full house of 9 juniors and put them through their paces with various 2 move

Checkmate puzzles.

Eric spent time with Pavina and Amalee looking at strong moves when moving into middle game tactics which I hope they will benefit from.

Azhar reviewed openings with Nirvan and Levana and Paul went through a game with Jacob and Markas.

For beginners and intermediates it is so important to look at the overall board to understand your opponents moves. This is the way forward for all.

Martin came for the 2nd session and played through a game by Kasparov…https://www.bournemouthjuniorchess.com/games/ His audience was Carlo/Andrew/Arthur and Rafan.

It was nice to see Mariella again and I was impressed by Vincent ‘s play after only coming along for a few weeks and is very young. The same applied to Rowley and as always he plays well and is improving. Steve reviewed basic openings and moves with Charlotte/Mariella and Vincent.

The ladder board games start next week with a 15 minute time control and players encouraged to notate the moves.

Thanks again to all our coaches for supporting the session.
