In our Final Saturday of the season we had an enjoyable end of season competition of 4 rounds allocated between a Major and Minor.
21 Juniors competed and the Final league tables are below:
Major section.
Tristan and Harry both finished on 3.5/4 and won a coveted carved wooden chess board complete with pieces. Both drew against each other so it was equal on countback – hope we can come up with a solution to a sharing of the prize – ideas in the post!
Good performances by Rafan and Aarav both finishing equal 3rd on 3 points.
Prize winners won cash prizes and medals.
Minor section.
Pavina produced an excellent performance to score 4/4 and deservedly won 1st prize
Noah was close on 3/4, and both Nirvan and Victor excelled expectation by scoring 2.5/4
Prize winners won cash prizes and medals.
All our Juniors were presented with attendance certificates.
It was great to see all Juniors and parents staying behind for prizegiving which was addressed by Eric.
Eric congratulated all the parents for supporting junior chess and seeing the benefit of playing chess. The consistency of the juniors through this term has been excellent and it was great to see both sessions joining together to play in this competition.
Eric introduced all the helpers which valiantly come along every week and have done over the years. Steve Bailey – 10 years, Paul Errington 12 years and in 2024, Tony Sanderson/Martin O’Neill and Azhar Ghose. Without their support the Saturday sessions would not be possible with the numbers we have every week.
Finally, Eric read out some famous quotes relating to chess:
CHESS IS AN ART WHICH EXPRESSES THE SCIENCE OF LOGIC – MIKHAIL BOTVINNIK
CHESS IS AN ART APPEARING IN FORM OF A GAME – SOVIET ENCYCLOPEDIA
CHESS IS EVERYTHING – ART, SCIENCE AND SPORT – ANATOLY KARPOV
CHESS IS THE TOUCHSTONE OF THE INTERLECT – WOLFGANK VON GOETHE
CHESS IS A STRUGGLE AGAINST ERROR – JOHANNES ZUKERTORT
CHESS IS A GAME OF BAD MOVES – ANDY SOLTIS
AND FINALLY
CHESS IS THE MOVEMENT OF PIECES EATING EACH OTHER – MARCEL DUCHAMP
Eric wishes everyone a very Merry Xmas and hope to see all in the New year when we return on the 11th January 2025.
